Wedding reception program in Nigeria: the order of events, with timings

· comtev

A Nigerian wedding reception usually runs four to five hours, and most follow a similar order. Guests arrive and are seated, the MC opens with prayer, the chairman and the high table are introduced, the parents come in, the couple make their grand entrance, then come the chairman's remarks, the cake, the toast, food, the couple's dance and spraying, gifts, the vote of thanks and the closing prayer. The sample program below puts times against each item for a reception that starts at 2pm, says who owns each one, and marks the places where receptions usually lose an hour.

The order of a Nigerian wedding reception program

This is the order most published Nigerian programs use. It matches the reception programs from Accuxel, Nigerian Waves and the MC templates shared on Nairaland, read on 12 October 2026. Families and churches change it, so treat it as the default to edit, not a rule.

  1. Arrival and seating of guests
  2. The MC welcomes everyone; opening prayer
  3. Introduction of the chairman or chairlady and the high table
  4. Introduction of both sets of parents
  5. Entrance of the bridal train
  6. Grand entrance of the couple
  7. Chairman's opening remarks
  8. Cutting of the cake
  9. Toast to the couple
  10. Food and drinks
  11. The couple's first dance, then the parents and the couple dance (spraying)
  12. Friends' and family dance, presentation of gifts
  13. The couple's thank-you
  14. Vote of thanks
  15. Closing prayer
  16. Dance floor opens; the couple leave

The "who owns it" column matters more than the times. When an item stalls, the room looks to the planner, and the fix is always one named person who knows they are next.

Where receptions usually run late

The church service

If the service ends at 1:30pm and the hall is 40 minutes away in Saturday traffic, the couple are not entering at 2:40pm. Put the drive time in the program before you print anything.

Guests arriving after the start

Build a buffer between the gate opening and the first item, and keep the items that need the whole room (the couple's entrance, the cake) after most people are seated.

The high table

Introductions run long when the MC does not have the list of names, titles and order in writing. Give the MC the list the day before, spelled the way each person wants it read.

Food

For a big hall, serving table by table takes time, and the room goes quiet while it happens. Many programs put the couple's dance after food so the hall is fed and ready to stand up.

Spraying

Nobody cuts the parents' dance short. Give it a real slot and let the gifts and friends' dance absorb the overrun.

If the traditional and the reception are on the same day

Some families hold the traditional wedding in the morning and the white wedding reception in the afternoon, sometimes in the same hall. Then the program needs a changeover. The couple change outfits, the hall is reset, and guests who came only for the reception arrive while traditional guests are still eating. Allow at least an hour between the end of the traditional and the start of the reception, and decide in advance whether the same access pass admits a guest to both.

What the planner needs in hand on the day

  • The program, printed, with the "who owns it" column, one copy for the MC, the head usher and the caterer.
  • The high table list with the order of introductions.
  • The guest list and the seating plan, so ushers can seat families together. Our guide to how many ushers for a wedding counts the team.
  • A plan for the gate. A printed access card can be photocopied and passed around; a QR pass is scanned once and stops working. We compared the two in wedding access card prices vs a QR pass.

On Comtev, the guest side of this is already done before the day. An AI assistant collects the guest list on WhatsApp from the people who hold the names, invitations and QR access passes go out in one tap, and door staff scan guests in with a phone, so the gate keeps moving while the MC is still on the opening prayer. See how it works.

FAQs

What is the order of a wedding reception program in Nigeria?

Guests arrive and are seated, the MC welcomes everyone and opens with prayer, the chairman and high table are introduced, then the parents, the bridal train and the couple enter. After the chairman's remarks come the cake, the toast, food, the couple's dance and spraying, gifts, the couple's thank-you, the vote of thanks and the closing prayer.

How long is a Nigerian wedding reception?

Most run four to five hours from the first item to the open dance floor. Add the time before the start for seating guests, and the drive from church if the service is elsewhere.

When is the cake cut at a Nigerian wedding reception?

Usually after the couple's entrance and the chairman's remarks, and before the main food. Some families move it later so that guests who arrive late still see it.

Who is the chairman at a Nigerian wedding?

The chairman or chairlady is a respected guest chosen by the families to preside over the reception. They sit at the high table, give opening remarks, and are introduced early in the program.

Can the traditional wedding and the reception hold on the same day?

Yes. Leave at least an hour between them for the couple to change and the hall to be reset, and decide in advance whether one access pass admits a guest to both events.

Does Comtev write the program for me?

No. Comtev handles the guest side, which means collecting the guest list on WhatsApp, sending invitations and QR access passes, and scanning guests in at the gate. The program is yours, and the sample above is free to copy.
