Rice and Stew Very Plenty: Planning Around the Nigerian RSVP

· comtev

There is an old joke that RSVP stands for Rice and Stew Very Plenty. The French can keep their version. This one is at least honest about what the letters end up meaning at a party.

The joke has stayed alive for one reason: guests keep proving it right, and the person paying the price is the event planner.

What RSVP actually means

RSVP is short for the French phrase répondez s'il vous plaît, which means please reply. On an invitation card it is an instruction: tell the host whether you are coming, by the date written next to it, so they know how many people to cook for and seat. That is the whole meaning. It does not mean the event is formal, it does not mean you must bring a gift, and it does not mean you should reply only if you are coming. A no is as useful to the planner as a yes. The Nigerian meaning is the rest of this article.

The three horsemen of the Nigerian RSVP

The yes that means nothing. A hundred people confirm. Sixty come. The other forty had every intention of coming, in the way that one intends to start the gym. Forty plates costed, cooked and wasted.

The silence that means yes. Two hundred invitations go out. A hundred people never respond, then arrive on the day, dressed beautifully, hungry, and slightly offended that you seem surprised. One columnist described the cycle perfectly: the uninvited and unconfirmed show up, are not fed, and then go about town complaining that the food finished. The complaint becomes your review.

The invisible plus-ones. One invitation, one name, four attendees. The maths of it is genuinely impressive. If banks compounded interest the way Nigerian guests compound plus-ones, we would all be rich.

There have been real workplace quarrels because colleagues attended a naming ceremony uninvited and were not fed. Fights have started over the absence of puff puff in small chops. This is a country where catering shortfalls become interpersonal crises, and the person blamed is never the guest. It is whoever planned the event.

Why over-catering is not a strategy

The standard defence is to cook for more people than confirmed. Caterers recommend it because it protects them. But at current plate prices, over-catering by eighty guests is several hundred thousand naira of insurance premium, paid in stew. Sometimes it saves you. Sometimes the crowd is small and you have donated a car's worth of jollof to the vendors' families. Guessing harder is not a system.

Planning around reality instead of pretending

You cannot fix Nigerian RSVP culture. Anyone selling you a tool that will make Nigerians confirm attendance like Scandinavians is selling you weather control. What you can do is make the signal you do get sharper, and act on it faster.

Make responding effortless. Nobody fills a form on a website. But everybody answers WhatsApp. When the invitation and the RSVP live in the same chat the guest already uses, response rates stop being theoretical.

Treat the list as live, not final. The useful number is not what people said last month. It is what the list says today. A live guest list that updates as replies come in gives you a real curve to plan against, instead of one heroic guess made three weeks out.

Let the yes do work automatically. On Comtev, planners set a simple rule: when a guest replies yes, send their QR access pass immediately. No manual follow-up. Another rule moves every guest who confirms into a confirmed list, so the caterer's number and the door's number are the same number. The guest who never replied? They are simply not holding a pass. If they arrive anyway, that becomes a decision your client makes at the gate, not a surprise that lands on you.

Cap the compounding. Plus-ones become explicit. An invitation for two admits two. The third person in the group chat photo is charming, but the scanner is loyal to arithmetic.

The quiet benefit: you stop being the bad guy

Here is the part that sneaks up on you after your first event run this way. The technology matters less than the diplomacy. When the door admits people by list, the planner is no longer the person turning away somebody's uncle. The system is. Uncles do not hold grudges against systems. They hold them against people. Let the software absorb the resentment; it does not attend family meetings.

Rice and stew will always be very plenty. The trick is knowing, with actual numbers, exactly how plenty.

The wording does some of the work too. Five messages that ask for a reply properly are in what to write on a wedding invitation.

FAQs

What is the full meaning of RSVP?

Répondez s'il vous plaît, French for please reply. On an invitation it asks the guest to confirm whether they are attending by a given date. The Nigerian version, Rice and Stew Very Plenty, is a joke about what happens when nobody does.

How do you write RSVP on a wedding invitation?

Put the ask, the deadline and the way to reply in one line, for example: RSVP by 7 November to Kemi on 0803 000 0000, or Reply YES or NO to this message by 7 November. On WhatsApp invitations the reply can be a single tap, which is why the reply rate is higher there than on a printed card.

Can software really improve RSVP rates in Nigeria?

It improves the signal. Invitations and replies happen inside WhatsApp, where your guests already live, so responding takes a tap instead of a form, and every reply lands on one live list instead of scattered chats. No tool will make every Nigerian confirm attendance, and you should distrust any that claims it will.

What is an example of an automation for RSVPs?

When a guest replies yes, send their e-access pass automatically. Or, for every guest in a list who confirms, move them to a confirmed list so catering and door numbers stay in sync. You write these rules once in plain language and Comtev runs them.

How do I handle guests who arrive without responding?

Their names simply hold no pass. At the gate, your client decides in the moment whether to admit them, and if yes, the guest is added and scanned in properly, so your count stays true.

Does the caterer see the live number?

You see the live number and share it however you like. The point is that a real, current figure exists at all times, instead of a guess frozen three weeks before the event.
