Wedding souvenirs in Nigeria: how many to order, who gets one, and how to stop double collection
· comtev
Order souvenirs from the confirmed guest list, not from the number of invitations, and decide before you order whether the souvenir is one per guest or one per household. Add a small margin for the high table, family and the people who help on the day, then hand them out at one point near the exit, against the guest list, so nobody collects twice. That is the whole method. The rest of this page works through it with an example, and shows how to get a price you can hold the seller to.
Start from the confirmed guest list
Invitations are not guests. Some people never reply, some reply and do not come, and some come with someone who was not invited. The number to order from is the number who have confirmed, plus a margin, not the number of cards printed.
If the list is still open three weeks before the wedding, close it before ordering souvenirs. Sellers need time to brand and pack, and an order that grows in the last week costs more per piece.
One per guest or one per household?
Decide this first, because it changes the number by a lot.
- One per guest suits small, personal items: a fan, a handkerchief, a keyholder.
- One per household suits larger items: a bag of rice, a kitchen set, a small appliance. A couple who came together take one home.
Write the rule down and tell the souvenir team. A rule the team has to guess on the day becomes two of everything for whoever asks loudest.
Who gets a souvenir
- Every confirmed guest (or household).
- The high table and both sets of parents, often a better item than the general guest gets.
- The bridal train.
- The people who worked the day: ushers, the MC, the band, the planner's team, if the family wants to include them.
Vendors are paid for their work and do not expect one, but many families give the MC and the ushers a souvenir as thanks.
A worked example
Say 600 guests were invited to the reception, 480 confirmed, and the family chose one souvenir per guest.
| Line | Count |
|---|---|
| Confirmed guests | 480 |
| High table and both sets of parents (separate item) | 20 |
| Bridal train | 12 |
| Ushers, MC and helpers | 18 |
| Margin for unlisted family and late confirmations, about 5% of confirmed guests | 24 |
| General souvenirs to order | 534 |
| Special souvenirs to order | 20 |
The margin is a judgement call. A family that keeps a tight list can keep it small; a family whose list grew every week should keep it larger.
Getting a price you can rely on
Souvenir prices move with the item, the branding, the quantity and the month you order. Small branded items such as fans, handkerchiefs and keyholders sit at the cheap end; kitchen sets and small appliances cost many times more. Online price lists go stale quickly, so ask two or three sellers for a written quote for your exact quantity, your branding and a delivery date at least a week before the wedding. A quote with a delivery date is a promise you can hold the seller to; a price on Instagram is not.
Where and when to hand them out
A common mistake is leaving souvenirs on a table near the entrance. They disappear early, sometimes with people who leave before the food.
- Hand them out near the exit, after the couple's thank-you, not at the gate.
- Use one point, staffed by two people who have the guest list.
- Tick each guest (or table) as the souvenir is collected.
- For one per household, give it to the person whose name is on the invitation.
- Keep the special souvenirs separate, and give them personally to the high table and the parents.
If guests were checked in at the gate against a list, the souvenir team can use the same list. A guest who is not on it can still be thanked, but the family decides whether they get a souvenir, not the person at the table.
Why the gate and the souvenirs are the same problem
Both run on one question: who was actually invited. When anyone can walk in, the food and the souvenirs run out before the guests they were meant for are served. A printed access card can be copied; a QR access pass is scanned once. We compared the two in wedding access card prices vs a QR pass.
On Comtev, a planner collects the guest list from both families on WhatsApp, invitations and QR access passes go out in one tap, and door staff scan guests in at the gate, so the list the souvenir team works from is the list of people who came in. See how it works.
FAQs
How many souvenirs should I order for my wedding?
Start from the confirmed guest count, decide whether it is one per guest or one per household, add the high table, bridal train and helpers, and add a small margin for late confirmations. Order from confirmed guests, not invitations sent.
Who should get a wedding souvenir in Nigeria?
Every confirmed guest or household, the high table and both sets of parents (often with a better item), the bridal train, and, if the family wishes, the ushers, MC and helpers.
When should wedding souvenirs be given out?
Near the end of the reception, at one point near the exit, against the guest list. Leaving them on a table at the entrance means they go early and unevenly.
How much do wedding souvenirs cost in Nigeria?
It depends on the item, the branding and the quantity. Small branded items are the cheapest; kitchen sets and appliances cost many times more. Get written quotes from two or three sellers for your exact quantity, with a delivery date.
How do I stop guests collecting two souvenirs?
Give them out at one staffed point, tick each name or table on the guest list as the souvenir is collected, and agree in advance whether the rule is one per guest or one per household.
